GET TO KNOW THE ANIMAL
Small facts. Big discoveries.
Red fox · Vulpes vulpes
A red fox has a narrow muzzle, pointed ears, and a large bushy tail. That tail can add 30–55.5 cm to its overall length.
When hunting a mouse, a red fox may pause to listen and watch before springing upward and landing with its front paws on the prey. Foxes also eat insects and fruit and hide spare food in caches that they can return to later.
- Not every red fox is red: the same species includes darker color forms.
- Dark lower legs are a familiar feature of the red fox’s outline.
How big do adults get?
- Male
- Shared range: 3–14 kg; usually larger
- Female
- Shared range: 3–14 kg; usually smaller
The shared adult range is about 3–14 kg, with strong regional variation. The cited source does not give separate male and female limits.
Height, length, or weight?
Standing height runs from the ground to the top of the animal. Shoulder height stops at the top of the shoulders. Length runs along the body; it is not how tall an animal stands. Weight tells us how heavy it is.
