THE FAMILY HEIGHT ESTIMATE

How tall will my child be?

Start with just the biological parents’ heights. A broad adult-height range for babies, young children, and parents planning ahead.

It starts with the parents.

A RANGE OF POSSIBILITIES

Big possibilities.
Two simple measurements.

Add the parents’ heights to see the estimate and its broad range.

What can parents’ heights tell you?

The mid-parental method provides a rough family target for adult height. It does not use the child’s current growth pattern, health, or puberty timing.

The calculation

Add the parents’ heights in centimetres, then add 13 cm for a boy or subtract 13 cm for a girl. Divide by two. The target range extends 10.2 cm in each direction. AAP mid-parental height method ↗

Can I use this before my baby is born?

Yes—only biological parents’ adult heights are needed. Choose “Show both estimates” if you do not know the child’s sex. The result is a broad family estimate.

What if I already have my child’s measurements?

Use the adult height calculator for the age-specific method available from ages 4 to 17 years 6 months. Regular measured growth provides context that this parents-only estimate cannot.
