A LITTLE WILDLIFE PERSPECTIVE

How tall is a rabbit?

Compare your height to a rabbit.

Wild European rabbits measure about 38–50 cm in body length. Pet breeds vary widely, and upright ears add to the height of the silhouette.

GET TO KNOW THE ANIMAL

Small facts. Big discoveries.

European rabbit · Oryctolagus cuniculus; ancestor of pet rabbits

Rabbits and hares are relatives, but they are not the same animal. A European rabbit has a compact body, long ears, and strong hind legs.

Wild European rabbits can share networks of underground tunnels called warrens, emerging to feed mainly between evening and morning. A sharp thump of the hind feet warns other rabbits of danger, linking those strong back legs to communication as well as a quick escape.

  • Domestic rabbit breeds descend from the European rabbit.
  • Selective breeding has produced pet rabbits with very different sizes and coats.

How big do adults get?

Male
Wild adult range: 1.5–2.5 kg
Female
Wild adult range: 1.5–2.5 kg

This is a combined-sex range for wild European rabbits, not separate maximums. Tiny and giant domestic breeds can fall well outside it.

Height, length, or weight?

Standing height runs from the ground to the top of the animal. Shoulder height stops at the top of the shoulders. Length runs along the body; it is not how tall an animal stands. Weight tells us how heavy it is.
