Red deer · Cervus elaphus
A male red deer is a stag; a female is a hind. The stag’s branching antlers change the shape of its head dramatically as they grow.
During the autumn rut, stags use roaring and parallel walks to assess rivals before a contest becomes a fight. Red deer in open country often gather in larger groups, while woodland animals may be seen alone or in smaller groups of mothers and calves.
- Stags shed their antlers and grow a new set each year.
- The summer coat is reddish, becoming browner during winter.
