Domestic pig · Lithuanian Native breed as a size example
Pigs come in far more shapes and colors than the familiar pink farm animal. Looking at a named breed is a better way to understand size than treating all pigs as identical.
The Lithuanian Native breed used for the size example often has small hanging skin appendages beneath its neck. Oklahoma State’s breed profile also describes thicker skin and longer bristles than the Lithuanian White, details that show why even pigs from the same region can have different outlines.
- A male pig is called a boar, and an adult female is called a sow.
- Lithuanian Native pigs may be white, black, tan, or a mixture of colors.
How big do adults get?
- Male
- Breed example: about 260 kg
- Female
- Breed example: about 180 kg
These adult weights are for the Lithuanian Native breed, not every pig. They are weights, not heights, and miniature breeds are much smaller.
Height, length, or weight?
Standing height runs from the ground to the top of the animal. Shoulder height stops at the top of the shoulders. Length runs along the body; it is not how tall an animal stands. Weight tells us how heavy it is.
