A LITTLE WILDLIFE PERSPECTIVE

How tall is a peacock?

Compare your height to a peacock.

A peacock’s long train changes its apparent size dramatically. Indian peafowl span about 0.86–2.12 m in total length; that is not their standing height.

GET TO KNOW THE ANIMAL

Small facts. Big discoveries.

Indian peafowl · Pavo cristatus

A peacock can fan out its long train into a wide display. The feathers carry eye-like patterns, while a peahen has a much shorter, quieter-colored outline.

Indian peafowl feed on a mix of plants and small animals, including insects, and can fly up into trees to roost. A bird may reach a low branch first and work its way higher, putting its long train well above predators on the ground.

  • The male’s train can average about 1.2 m in length on its own.
  • Indian peafowl have strong legs and can run into vegetation for cover.

How big do adults get?

Male
Shared range: 2.7–6 kg; long train
Female
Shared range: 2.7–6 kg; usually smaller

Peacock means the male; the female is a peahen. The combined adult weight range is 2.7–6 kg. The displayed silhouette uses a 1 m outline height, not a 1 m body length.

Height, length, or weight?

Standing height runs from the ground to the top of the animal. Shoulder height stops at the top of the shoulders. Length runs along the body; it is not how tall an animal stands. Weight tells us how heavy it is.
