GET TO KNOW THE ANIMAL

Small facts. Big discoveries.

Tiger · Panthera tigris

A tiger’s stripes are more than a striking outfit. Each animal has its own pattern, so researchers can use photographs to tell individual tigers apart.

Most adult tigers travel and hunt alone, leaving scent marks and scratches that advertise their territories to other tigers. They are also capable swimmers; forests, mangroves, and waterways can all form part of a tiger’s hunting ground, where it approaches prey quietly before a short attack.

  • Tigers live in several kinds of Asian habitat, including cold forests and tropical forests.
  • A tiger’s strong jaws and sharp teeth help it catch and eat prey.

How big do adults get?

Male
Amur males: typically 400–600 lb
Female
Amur females: typically 250–300 lb

These are Amur tiger weight ranges, about 181–272 kg for males and 113–136 kg for females. Large males can exceed the usual range; Sumatran tigers are smaller.

Height, length, or weight?

Standing height runs from the ground to the top of the animal. Shoulder height stops at the top of the shoulders. Length runs along the body; it is not how tall an animal stands. Weight tells us how heavy it is.
