Small facts. Big discoveries.
Domestic horse · Equus caballus
A pony and a large riding horse belong to the same domestic species. Breeding has produced a huge variety of sizes, so choosing a breed matters more than picking one “average horse.”
Horses communicate with far more than a neigh: ear position, facial movements, and the way they hold their heads all send signals to other horses. Their grazing diet centers on grasses, although the plants available to free-ranging herds change with the season and location.
- Each leg ends in a single hoof.
- The mane grows along the neck; the long tail hair creates another distinctive part of the outline.
How big do adults get?
- Male
- Many breeds: 0.9–1.7 m at the shoulder
- Female
- Many breeds: 0.9–1.7 m at the shoulder
The shared reference range is about 0.9–1.7 m at the shoulder and 227–900 kg. It is not a male/female split or a limit for every breed.
Height, length, or weight?
Standing height runs from the ground to the top of the animal. Shoulder height stops at the top of the shoulders. Length runs along the body; it is not how tall an animal stands. Weight tells us how heavy it is.
